Acres of Ice

Climate change is a pressing reality in Ladakh, where unpredictable snowfall, rising temperatures and glacial recession disrupt traditional water cycles that sustain agriculture and livelihoods. Acres of Ice was born with a single, powerful vision: to combine traditional wisdom with modern technology to ensure water security for mountain communities and secure a reliable future even in the most extreme climates.

Inspired by local innovations like ice terraces and ice stupas—artificial structures devised to store water as ice throughout the winter—we have developed a data-backed, scalable model for constructing artificial ice reservoirs in high altitude villages. This technology can also be adapted for automating micro-irrigation, and other water management solutions. Our approach addresses water scarcity and empowers local communities to preserve their traditions and thrive in the face of climate challenges.
