About ActionAid EU Office
ActionAid (AA) was founded as a charity in the UK in 1972, and soon grew its presence in countries around the world. In the 1990s, it adopted a human rights-based approach to development. ActionAid International was formed in 2003 to provide the Global Secretariat (GS) for the ActionAid Federation of country offices. It is registered in the Netherlands but Head offices are in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.
The ActionAid International Global Secretariat (GS) European Union Office in Brussels started in 1999 to facilitate the engagement with EU institutions and European civil society organizations. At the moment, ActionAid EU office keeps staff based in Brussels and other EU cities. Moreover, the office relies on human resources and competencies present in the ActionAid Federation (i.e., in other offices and members) for specific tasks. The EU office coordinates pan-European initiatives with ActionAid members in the region but also with partners and networks sharing their values and approach.
The AA EU Office acts at EU level as main link between the European members of the Federation and its EU-based partners with the principal European Union institutions and bodies coordinating, orienting, advocating and supporting its network of organizations on several topics and priorities regarding actions and initiatives developed at national, international and European level. ActionAid is a strong defender of the European Union project and its fundamental values; respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.
ActionAid has members in the following EU member states: Greece, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Sweden, Ireland and Denmark. Also, ActionAid operates in other EU countries, such as Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia, Hungary, Cyprus, Austria and Bulgaria, where it has consolidated partners on the ground.
