About AICHR Malaysia
In 2009, ASEAN established the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) as its overarching body responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the region.
Each ASEAN Member State appoints one Representative to the AICHR. The Representative, who must impartially discharge his or her duties, serves a term of three years and may be consecutively re-appointed for only one more term.
Malaysia's first Representative for the period of 2009 to 2015 was H.E. Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr. Muhammad Shafee Abdullah. H.E. Mr. Edmund Bon Tai Soon (2016-2018) succeeded the post, followed by H.E. Mr Eric Paulsen (2019-2021) and H.E. Professor Dato' Dr Aishah Bidin (2022-2023).
H.E. Mr. Edmund Bon Tai Soon has been re-appointed as the Representative of Malaysia to the AICHR for the term 2024-2026.
