About Algae Scope

Algae Scope’s mission is to replace harmful PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in textiles with innovative, high-performing alternatives made 100% from seaweed. PFAS ‘forever’ chemicals are commonly used for their water- and fire-resistant properties, but they persist in the environment and the human body, with links to cancer, infertility, and Alzheimer's disease. With over 99% of individuals showing PFAS exposure and children bearing an even higher toxic load, global regulators are now cracking down, spurring demand for safer, sustainable solutions.

Algae Scope addresses this urgent challenge by transforming seaweed into a high-performance coating that provides the same water-repellent and fire-retardant benefits without the health and environmental risks of PFAS. Initially developed for textiles like cotton and polyester, the technology shows promise across a wide array of materials, including soft furnishings, industrial textiles and outdoor gear.

We support industries to respond to global regulations and stop using hazardous chemicals by replacing PFAS with our cost-effective, bio-based alternative. Few options exist that offer high-performance and transparent, fully natural source ingredients using a globally abundant biomass. Our technology is scalable, offers a ‘drop-in solution’ as it is broadly compatible with existing manufacturing infrastructures, and enables companies to meet United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and corporate Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) reporting goals.

Aligned with circular economy principles, regenerative seaweed has been shown to positively impact ocean health by capturing carbon, improving water quality, and supporting biodiversity.
