About Amani Foundation & Initiatives

Amani Foundation (US 501(c)(3): 364806201) and Amani Initiatives (Tanzania NGO Reg. 00NGO/R/7249) are sister organizations transforming child welfare in Tanzania through sustainable, locally led, and policy-aligned care. Our mission is to keep children within safe, loving families by addressing the root causes of separation, particularly poverty, food insecurity, and lack of access to education. Rather than perpetuate institutional care, we deliver community-driven alternatives grounded in Tanzanian child protection law and global evidence on family-based care. In 2025, Amani began a new chapter: officially winding down Amani Children’s Home in line with national reintegration mandates, and scaling a family-first model that supports the same children through wraparound services delivered at the household level. What We Do: - Reunify children with safe, willing caregivers and provide long-term social work follow-up. - Eliminate barriers to education through tuition support, supplies, and school monitoring. - Build economic resilience with climate-smart goat co-ops, home gardens, and poultry projects. - Empower women caregivers with parenting groups and peer mentorship. - Integrate government social welfare officers into every step of program implementation. How We Work: Our theory of change is simple but powerful: when vulnerable children are supported to stay in school and heal from trauma and their caregivers are equipped with tools for economic resilience: families grow stronger, and the orphanage cycle is broken. Amani Initiatives leads local implementation across northern Tanzania. Amani Foundation supports this work through global partnerships, fundraising, and strategic learning. Together, we model a new approach to care that is participatory, scalable, and designed by the communities it serves.
