About Amar Kutir Society for Rural Development
Amar Kutir (my cottage), a seed that sprouted first time in 1920s, was an answer to its founder, Sushen Mukherjee’s long spiritual search for the meaning of life. An answer that turned out to be a commune, a space where collective spirit reaped excellence of craft ship. When the colonial puppetry of power shut down Amar Kutir in 1930s, its soul continued to breathe in the prison walls with the company of books that ceaselessly narrated stories of freedom and its unending possibilities.
When Pannalal Dasgupta, a freedom fighter met Amar Kutir with his visions on decentralized power, it was a new revolution bringing life of self sufficiency and dignity back to the milieu of Santiniketan’s villages.
Amar Kutir’s leather unit is one of the earliest endeavours of the society. Various products like bags, purses, belt etc are made in our unit which has close to forty artisans in it who are coming from various villages near and far.
