About Amsterdam UMC - Tytgat Institute
The Tytgat Institute for Liver and Intestinal Research is part of Amsterdam UMC and based at Amsterdam UMC – location AMC. It is a leading research center dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing treatments in the fields of hepatology and gastroenterology.
Our research is translational in nature, bridging the gap between fundamental science and clinical application. In close collaboration with various (clinical) departments, we explore both basic and applied aspects of liver and intestinal diseases, always with a clear focus on addressing real-world clinical challenges. Our work contributes not only to scientific understanding, but also directly to the development of innovative therapies for patients.
Internationally recognized as a top-tier academic research institute, the Tytgat Institute focuses on key areas including inflammatory bowel disease, pediatric intestinal failure and development, cholestasis, and metabolic liver diseases. Research activities are organized into three main lines: Intestinal Inflammation, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Liver Disease.
In addition to research, we play an active role in education. Our staff contributes to medical training at Amsterdam UMC, as well as bachelor’s and master’s programs in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and other institutions. We offer lectures, course coordination, mentoring, and program management. Many students from UvA, VU, and beyond complete internships and research projects at our institute, including theses and literature reviews.
