Anesthesiology and Anesthesiology Open share a mission: to promote scientific discovery and knowledge in perioperative, critical care, pain, palliative care, and sleep medicine to advance patient care.

Founded in 1940, Anesthesiology leads the world in publishing and disseminating the highest quality work to inform daily clinical practice and transform the practice of medicine in the specialty.

Launched in October 2025, Anesthesiology Open is an online, peer-reviewed, open access journal that complements and expands the reach of Anesthesiology by publishing high-quality articles with both broad and specialized clinical and research interest. 

Independent and internationally recognized Editorial Boards oversee the peer review process for both journals. The broad dissemination of research published in the journals is facilitated by an active social media program. In addition, Anesthesiology publishes visual abstracts, video abstracts, infographics, podcasts, and journal CME—all designed to help readers engage with the content.
