About Appalachian Citizens' Law Center
Founded in 2001, the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center (ACLC) is a nonprofit public interest law and policy organization based in the coalfields of Eastern Kentucky. We use litigation, policy advocacy, and grassroots coalition-building to pursue a healthy, safe, and just future for Appalachian communities. Our work addresses both the individual and systemic costs of natural resource extraction in the coalfields, including occupational illness, workplace safety violations, environmental degradation, infrastructure disinvestment, and the escalating risks of flooding worsened by mountaintop removal practices. We work in deep partnership with coalfield communities to bring frontline voices and solutions to state, regional, and national decision-makers.
