About Arushi
Arushi is a Bhopal-based voluntary organization working with people with disabilities to facilitate a just, humane and equal-opportunity society. The focus of our efforts is to help people with disabilities develop capacities to achieve their potential and to advocate their rights and concerns through sensitization of the community.
‘Arushi’, the name means the first ray of the Sun. Just as the Sun’s first rays bring forth a new day, fresh hope, promise and prospects, Arushi strives to bring hope and courage into the lives of people with disability.
Arushi was formally set up in 1992, but the work had begun much earlier when a group of students began to read out texts to their blind friend. Soon they met other blind students, desperately in need of scribes. Gradually, empowerment and integration of these students into the mainstream became the focus of this group. As the enormous need unfolded, volunteers grew in numbers and help came in from unexpected quarters.
The efforts widened to reach out to persons with other disabilities. Disability when coupled with conditions such as poverty, lack of affordable assistive devices, physical barriers, restriction of access, ignorance, neglect or overprotection often leads to some form of oppression and marginalization.
Shri Gulzar’s devotion to the cause, his innovative ideas, and the power of his words reached out to hundreds; they responded in countless ways and support for Arushi gathered steam. As the volunteers went on with their small efforts that would bring about big changes, people from all walks of life – students, academicians, engineers, architects, artists, and housewives – joined Arushi. They volunteered time, resources, and skills. With our eyes firmly focused on the challenges, we move ahead, one step at a time, one small change at a time, one person’s dilemma at a time... making the world one bit better....
