ASReview

ASReview is an open-source software tool developed at Utrecht University that utilizes state-of-the-art active learning techniques to streamline the screening process of large amounts of text, including scientific papers, policy reports, and social media data. Our software is designed to assist scholars and practitioners in systematically searching for potentially relevant documents to provide a comprehensive overview of their topic of interest.

We offer multiple machine learning models and exploration and simulation modes, making it easy for users to compare and design algorithms. ASReview is also intended to be easily extensible, allowing third parties to add modules that enhance the pipeline with new models, data, and other extensions.

At ASReview, we prioritize transparency and community engagement. People are the oracles, making the final decision, and we welcome contributors, maintainers, and users to interact with each other and be part of our growing community.

Our project is coordinated by Rens van de Schoot, full Professor at the Department of Methodology & Statistics, and Jonathan de Bruin, Lead engineer of the ASReview project. Our advisory board consists of machine learning experts, health and social data scientists, public management and behavior specialists, NLP experts, open science experts, and UX experts.

We are divided into three key modules: Software, Research, and Education, which all fall under the ASReview project itself. Our software module includes ASReview LAB, the Benchmark Platform, and plug-ins and extensions included in the ASReview GitHub repository. Our Research module encompasses legacy research to show the foundation of our product, as well as new opportunities for research related to ASReview. Our Education module offers workshops, teaching materials, and user guides to assist new users in working with our software.
