Overview

About Athletic Skills Model

🇬🇧We move too little and when we do move, it is often too one-sided. As a result, our motor skills and fitness suffer. This is what we call movement poverty. It increases the risk of injuries, dropouts in sports, various health problems, and diminishes the enjoyment of physical activity.

The Athletic Skills Model® (ASM) aims to get people to move more and in a more varied manner. Enjoyment is a key component of this, providing a solid foundation for lifelong physical activity. To this end, the ASM introduces the Fundamental 10!® for movement'. The ASM is a practical and scientifically substantiated model for everyone involved in movement: in healthcare, (elite) sports, physical education, and the arts and culture sector.

The ASM is disseminated in two ways:

1. Through the ASM Academy, where professionals are trained and educated in applying the ASM in their field, movement programs, and sports and movement policies.
2. Through the design of indoor and outdoor spaces based on the concepts of PLAYCE® and Skills Garden®. These designs encourage people to move more, in more varied ways, and with more enjoyment. They can be found throughout the Netherlands, such as at ALO Amsterdam, KNVB Campus in Zeist, Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht, and are spreading internationally. The first Skills Garden was opened in 2019 in public space in Almere, and the largest Skills Garden in Europe is located at the Sport and Learning Park De Langeleegte in Veendam.

The founders of the Athletic Skills Model are René Wormhoudt and Prof. Dr. Geert Savelsbergh, and it has been published in various publications in Dutch (2012), English (2018), and Japanese (2021).
