About Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC)
End-of-life mattresses are a growing challenge in Australia. Millions are discarded each year, placing pressure on landfill, creating safety risks, and locking up valuable materials that could be recovered and reused. The Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC) exists to change that.
We are a not-for-profit, industry led product stewardship organisation working across the entire bedding lifecycle. From design and materials, through to use, recovery and reuse, we support the bedding industry to move toward a truly circular economy. The ABSC brings together suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, recyclers, governments and research partners to create practical, scalable solutions that reduce waste and improve outcomes for business, community and the environment.
Our work goes beyond end-of-life. We advocate for better standards and effective regulation. We support recyclers through investment, collaboration and process improvement. We help industry rethink product design so bedding is built for longevity, reuse and recyclability, not landfill.
Mattresses are bulky, complex products. When systems fail, the consequences are visible, from landfill congestion to illegal dumping. Solving this requires shared responsibility, clear pathways and industry-wide action.
That’s the role of the ABSC. We challenge the status quo, stand firmly against greenwashing, and work alongside our members to deliver measurable, verifiable progress. Together, we’re building a more responsible bedding industry and a better future for bedding in Australia.
