Overview

About Biosolids Resource Recovery

Water resource recovery plays a critical role in every community across the world. While available biosolids treatment options, resources, and end-use opportunities may vary dramatically by location, biosolids are an endlessly renewable resource that will continue to exist while humans roam this earth. With an estimated 7.2 million dry tons of biosolids generated annually and nearly 55% of that beneficially reused, the potential for biosolids end-use markets continues to broaden as we seek innovative possibilities for this valuable resource. Maximizing resource recovery directly supports the tenets of a circular economy by producing a renewable fertilizer to enrich soils, restoring damaged lands, enhancing crop production, increasing soil water-holding capacity, capturing carbon in soils, generating renewable energy, reducing fossil-fuel derived fertilizers, and recovering nutrients including nitrogen and non-renewable phosphorus. Collaborating with Water Environment Federation members, Regional Biosolids Organizations, partnering organizations, and local stakeholders, we can circulate news and resources necessary to elevate the voice for biosolids as a solution.
