About Chopwell Regeneration Group
Chopwell is an ex-mining village in Gateshead with c3,700 residents. Chopwell Regeneration Group (“CRG”) was founded by residents in 2017 and we became a charity in 2019.
Our 10 trustees are all local people who live /work in Chopwell.
CRG’s purpose is for our community to regenerate and revitalise our village & improve the lives and life chances of local people. We are doing it in our own way.
We have 180 members and 200+ volunteers which is over 5% of our community.
Until 2021 everything we did was done by volunteers. We have 10 part-time staff.
We run a community building on our main street (“The Bank”) which we fully opened in March 2022. At The Bank we have:
• a ‘pay-what-you-feel’ café;
• a ‘pay-what-you-feel’ community market with fridge/freezer;
• events, activities and courses for people of all ages and backgrounds, from our “Code & Create Club” for children aged 7-11 to our Men’s Pie Club, volunteering and work experience opportunities (20 regular volunteers in the café - 25% of whom are aged 16 to 18);
• employability training and support, including DWP work experience placements;
• rooms upstairs rented to local businesses and social enterprises; and
• co-working room with fully serviced desks rented by the day.
Our volunteers also run a thriving community allotment.
450+ people a week (all ages and backgrounds) access our services and facilities.

There are challenges in Chopwell where there is a lot of financial hardship and a lack of employment opportunities but there is also enormous pride and passion for our unique
village and its history, along with a strong and very determined community spirit.
Local people created CRG. Our community is working together to change our future, exactly as Chopwell residents famously did 100 years ago. CRG’s activities and strategies are determined by the ideas and needs of our community.
