About D.C. Sentencing Commission
The D.C. Sentencing Commission is an independent government agency that implements, monitors, and supports the District of Columbia Voluntary Sentencing Guidelines. The Commission is mandated to:
- Review and analyze pertinent sentencing data;
- Review sentencing data, policies, and practices in the District of Columbia
annually;
- Submit an annual report to the Council summarizing the Commission's
activities and including further recommendations as appropriate;
- Review and research sentencing policies and practices locally and nationally
and make recommendations to the Council that increase the fairness and
effectiveness of sentences in the District of Columbia;
- Make such other recommendations designed to enhance the fairness and
effectiveness of criminal sentencing policies and practices in the District of
Columbia.
