Maximizing Maize Yields: The Impact of Certified Seeds in Niger State

A #farmer in Niger State planted 1 hectare of maize.

Same land.

Same effort.

Same season.

But this time, a different seed.

Here is what changed.

The year before, he used a local open-pollinated variety he had saved from the previous harvest.

Yield: 1.2 tonnes per #hectare.

Market price at the time: ₦180,000 per tonne.

Total income from that hectare: ₦216,000.

The following season, NOBA supplied him with a #certified improved seed variety bred for Nigeria conditions.

Same land. Same rainfall. Same inputs.

Yield: 4.8 tonnes per hectare.

Total income from that hectare: ₦864,000.

That is not a marginal improvement.

That is ₦648,000 more from the same piece of land in the same amount of time.

That is school fees paid.

That is a motorcycle bought.

That is a family that does not borrow to eat at the end of the #season.

Here is the part most people miss.

The #seed is the cheapest input in farming.

A bag of certified improved maize seed costs between ₦8,000 and ₦15,000.

The #yield difference it creates can be worth hundreds of thousands of naira.

No other single decision a smallholder farmer makes, not fertiliser, not irrigation, not timing, has the same return on #investment as choosing the right seed.

Yet the majority of smallholder farmers in northern Nigeria are still planting saved seed or unverified local varieties.

Not because they do not want better.

Because access to certified seed in the right quantity, at the right time, in their location, has historically been the problem.

That is the problem NOBA Africa solves.

We supply #certified seeds across Kaduna, Niger, and Nasarawa states with nationwide delivery.

We also trade Paddy Rice, Soybeans, Sesame, and Sheanut, and provide outgrower management, farmer training, and agricultural consultancy.
