A $3.9 billion deal that would reshape MLB ownership history is in motion.
The family of late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler has reached an agreement to sell the franchise to an investor group led by Kwanza Jones and her husband, José E. Feliciano, co-founder of private equity firm Clearlake Capital.
If approved, Jones would become the first Black female majority owner in Major League Baseball (MLB) history.
The reported $3.9 billion valuation would shatter the previous MLB record, as the 2020 purchase of the New York Mets set the prior benchmark at $2.4 billion.
The deal still requires a formal vote among all 30 MLB clubs, expected at the league's quarterly meeting in June, and needs at least 22 votes to move forward.
