A hand-made character test from an indie Blender film, no AI ❤️
Solace put out an early test of their main character, Asja – a clip that's three things at once: an animation test, a look-dev pass, and a shading exploration for her face. They're working it all out together instead of separately.
Solace is an independent animated tale about grief, animal companionship, and the world between life and death. It's directed by Wojtek Fus, a concept artist and director who's worked with Netflix, Disney, Blur, Lightspeed and Rebel Wolves, and he's making it with a small team. It's been in the works for a few years, and they're still early on, so this is a test, not a piece of the finished film, and there's no release attached to it.
The work is done in Blender. For this test, Asja was animated by Toni Buenavida and rigged by Lucas Salamon, and the hair runs on Bartosz Styperek's Hair Tool addon, which he adapted for the production. Hair Tool normally builds hair-card and curve-based hair aimed at game-ready and real-time work, so bending it toward a stylized cinematic character is part of what's going on here.
Crafted by humans, no AI used.
