Stewart Rhodes is the founder of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group and was convicted of seditious conspiracy over the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Now, he may receive compensation from the Justice Department's $1.8 billion "weaponization" fund.
In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said anyone who believes they were unfairly targeted by the Justice Department or other government agencies can apply. Independent commissioners — not President Donald Trump or DOJ officials — would determine who qualifies, considering factors including conduct, sentencing and whether a punishment fit the crime.
Blanche declined to comment on Rhodes specifically but said the severity of a sentence could be one factor in deciding claims. Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in prison for seditious conspiracy, one of the longest Jan. 6-related sentences, before Trump later commuted his sentence.
