Protecting and Restoring Posidonia Oceanica: A Collaborative Marine Ecosystem Initiative
Together with Ghost Diving Spain and with the valued support of GAMOMAT, we recently carried out a project focused on protecting and restoring #Posidonia oceanica along the Spanish coastline.
During the dive operation, our team located an abandoned fishing net trapped on a Posidonia #meadow. The #ghostnet had become entangled in the seagrass, threatening one of the Mediterranean’s most important marine ecosystems. After carefully extracting the net from the seabed, we were able to recover and replant damaged Posidonia fragments in the affected area to support natural regeneration.
Why is Posidonia oceanica so important? 🌱
• It is an endemic #Mediterranean seagrass species and one of the region’s most valuable ecosystems
• Posidonia meadows produce large amounts of oxygen, earning them the nickname “the lungs of the Mediterranean”
• They provide shelter, breeding grounds, and food for hundreds of marine species
• Healthy Posidonia beds help prevent coastal erosion by stabilizing the seabed
• They are also incredibly efficient carbon sinks, storing significant amounts of CO2 and helping combat climate change
A huge thank you to everyone involved in this mission and to #GAMOMAT for supporting initiatives that create a real, positive impact beneath the surface.
