Repurposing Asphalt Parking Lots: Harnessing Solar Power for Multiple Benefits

Parking lots are already paved, already exposed to the sun, and already taking up huge amounts of space.

We built millions of acres of asphalt and gave almost none of it a second job.

Covering them with solar panels can generate power, shade cars, reduce heat, and keep farmland for farming.

It also means cooler cars in summer, less stormwater runoff, and EV charging infrastructure that’s already wired into a parking lot you were going to build anyway.

Meanwhile open fields keep doing what they’ve always done: growing food, holding soil, supporting ecosystems we can’t get back once they’re gone.

The infrastructure for solar carports already exists. The technology isn’t the bottleneck — the decision is.
