Transforming Historic Buildings into Modern Cafés: The Art of Adaptive Reuse in Hospitality

Adaptive Reuse in Heritage Hospitality

Many of the most rewarding spaces we work on start life as historic buildings. Barns, coach houses, castles, estate structures that were never designed for modern foodservice operations.

These images capture stages from the conversion of a former coach house at #Belsay into a new café space. Like many heritage projects, the work has evolved over time, requiring careful coordination between conservation, construction and hospitality design.

Adaptive reuse demands flexibility. Existing structures shape circulation, services, ventilation and access long before counters or menus are considered. Success relies on fully understanding operational processes, regulatory requirements and how modern hospitality can sit comfortably within historic fabric.

When done well, hospitality gives heritage buildings a sustainable future - bringing activity, visitors and long-term purpose while respecting what already exists.
