Understanding the Progress Illusion in Business: Learn from Setbacks

A lot goes wrong before anything starts going right.

We don’t usually see that part, though.

We only see the wins, the smooth outcomes, the “it all worked out” moments.

In psychology, this is close to the progress illusion, we expect linear growth, so setbacks feel like failure instead of feedback. Each miss creates cognitive friction, but that’s exactly what pushes learning and adaptation.

In business, this shows up as failed campaigns, missed targets, and ideas that don’t convert. The teams that win aren’t the ones who avoid mistakes, they are the ones who iterate faster because of them.

What we don’t see:
– the attempts that didn’t land
– the ideas that fell flat
– the quiet resets no one talks about

Progress rarely looks like a straight line. It loops, stalls, and sometimes feels like it’s going backwards.

But those “wrong turns” aren’t wasted, they are part of the path.

If things feel messy right now, you are not off track. You’re probably right in the middle of it.

Keep going.
