Workplace chemical exposure causing asthma is one of Victoria's most

Workplace chemical exposure causing asthma is one of Victoria's most under-claimed occupational diseases.

Healthcare workers, cleaners and hospitality kitchen staff are exposed to industrial-strength disinfectants, sterilising agents, glutaraldehyde and latex allergens every shift. Over months or years, repeated exposure can cause occupational asthma, chronic airway disease, or chemical sensitivity that can end careers.

Most workers do not realise this is a compensable WorkCover claim. Time limits for occupational diseases differ from those for ordinary workplace injuries, meaning a worker may still be entitled to claim years after exposure began.

In this short explainer, Pey Hor (Partner, Zaparas Lawyers) sets out what cleaners, healthcare workers and hospitality staff in Victoria need to know about their rights.

Zaparas Lawyers is ranked Doyle's Guide First Tier for work injury law in Victoria.
