Culture isn't built in the good times.
It's revealed in the bad ones.
"Culture" has become the most overused word in business.
And most companies still get it completely wrong.
They think culture is the stuff you add on top.
The ping pong table in the break room, or the Friday pizza.
But actual culture is so much more than just perks and benefits. It's:
✅ How decisions get made when stakes are high
✅ What behaviors get rewarded (and what gets ignored)
✅ How feedback is given - or avoided
✅ What happens when things go wrong
✅ Who gets promoted and why
✅ What your meetings actually look like
You can have unlimited PTO and still have a toxic culture.
You can have zero perks and have a team that runs through walls for each other.
This is why most culture initiatives fail.
They focus on the visible stuff because it's easy.
Meanwhile, the invisible stuff, how people actually treat each other, stays broken.
Here's a quick audit:
What do people experience on their worst day at your company?
When pressure hits?
When someone makes a mistake?
That's your real culture.
Not the values on the wall, but the stuff that happens in the small moments.
If there's a gap between what you say your culture is and what people actually live every day...
That gap is the only thing your team sees.
♻️ Repost to remind your network of what real culture looks like.
