Harvard Business School studied 50,000 adults across 25 countries and found something I’ve felt in my bones before I ever came across this stat.
Daughters of working mothers earn 23% more than their peers with stay-at-home mums. Over 33% hold supervisory roles, compared to 25% from more traditional households.
I’ve been a working mum since day 1.
I’ve also been a single mum, building a business with a one and two year old.
My kids grew up watching me pitch, pivot, and push through.
They sat in board meetings. They ate dinner at the office during the build. They saw what it looks like when you don't quit.
The research backs up my anecdotal evidence.
A mother who works doesn't harm her children. She gives them a blueprint.
I watched my own kids absorb things I never explicitly taught them.
Things like resilience, work ethic, and the knowledge that life throws curveballs, you deal with them and carry on.
My kids are fiercely capable today, not in spite of their upbringing, but because of it.
We need to stop framing working motherhood as a compromise. It’s one of the most powerful things a woman can model for her children.
To every working mum reading this: you are not failing your kids. You’re showing them what grit looks like up close.
That’s an extraordinary gift.
P.S. The study is over a decade old but based on the work I do and the people I speak with, I imagine that today’s data would prove my point even more strongly.
