About Health Proactivists Initiative
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like stroke, type 2 diabetes, breast and cervical cancers are a growing public health challenge in Nigeria.
1 in 6 Nigerian women and 1 in 5 Nigerian men in their 30s would not live to celebrate their 70th birthday due to common NCDs (IHME, 2021).
Late diagnosis, awareness gaps and lack of access to essential health services contribute to high rates of death and disability.
NCDs also raise household costs spent on healthcare, and in Nigeria, where the struggles with poverty and limited health coverage remain significant, they are a threat to the 2030 global sustainable development agenda.
HPI does not accept this reality and is thus acting on NCDs in Nigeria by:
• co-creating awareness in the preferred language of the multilingual population we serve
• connecting people to life-saving screening and timely care
• advocating for governments to close the commitment-implementation gap and ensure reliable preventive services and sustainable care at the primary care level
Our vision: No Premature NCD death, as long as it can be prevented or treated.
Our core target demographic:
Women
Young people
Others: Men, girls, boys (who may have a higher than average risk of NCDs)
Our key stakeholders:
People with lived experience of NCDs (including care partners)
Local Government Bodies
Primary Health workers
Workplaces
Schools
Young people (esp. in health training programmes)
Informal employment groups (Market or Transport Unions)
