About Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary
The Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary is an Indigenous-led nonprofit organization working to establish a permanent Indigenous Gathering Place in Moh’kinsstis (Calgary), on Treaty 7 territory.
Calgary is home to one of the fastest-growing Indigenous populations in Canada, yet there is currently no visible, Indigenous-led, purpose-built gathering place dedicated to ceremony, culture, teaching, and community connection. The Indigenous Gathering Place is intended to address that gap.
The vision is to create a welcoming and culturally grounded space where Indigenous Peoples can gather for ceremony, cultural practices, learning, and community events. The Gathering Place will also serve as a place where Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can come together to learn, build relationships, and deepen understanding of the cultures, histories, and living traditions of Treaty 7 Nations and Indigenous Peoples who call this city home.
Founded in 2018, the Indigenous Gathering Place Society is guided by Indigenous governance and the wisdom of Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Our work is rooted in relationship-building, community engagement, and Indigenous ways of gathering and decision-making.
The Indigenous Gathering Place represents reconciliation in action. It is an opportunity to create a permanent and visible space that honours the cultures of Treaty 7 Nations, strengthens Indigenous presence in the city, and supports future generations in carrying forward language, ceremony, and cultural knowledge.
Working in collaboration with Indigenous communities, organizations, and partners, we are committed to bringing this vision to life.
