About Association of Irish Powerchair Football
The Association of Irish Powerchair Football is the governing body of Powerchair Football in Ireland. The ethos of the AIPF is to give every powerchair user in Ireland the opportunity to play and experience the joy of football.
Set up in 2009, it organises League and Cup competitions, prepares teams for international tournaments and events and develops new teams and clubs around the country. Powerchair Football is a mixed gender team sport played by powerchair users. The role of the AIPF is to organise social and competitive opportunities for players and their families, ensuring that the sport is as accessible as possible for all who want to take part.
Our players are the heart and soul of the sport, and their participation and performance match the levels of sporting excellence of any other athlete or sport. Their lived experience of disabilities like muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, quadriplegia and other conditions bring them together, building community and purpose around a shared love of sport. Played on an indoor court (similar in size to a basketball court) matches consist of two teams of four players and a ball, replete with skill, strategy, and passion, much like regular football.
Operating under the remit of the international governing body, Federation International Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA), headquartered in Paris, France, the global game is played with standardised rules and adheres to an established constitution. Here in Ireland, we have grown from a handful of players to a league of over 60 talented athletes. There are currently, around two dozen countries have teams involved in the sport.
The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has been a long standing partner of Powerchair Football and the AIPF for many years through its ‘Football For All’ program.
