The primary task of the Hydrometeorologist will be to provide expert analysis and recommendations on hydrometeorological conditions, water resource management, and flood risk assessment in the country's urban and mountainous terrain. This will support effective planning and decision-making processes for water management and disaster risk reduction.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Collect and analyze hydro-meteorological data through the means of instruments and satellite-based info.
- Prepare weather reports and forecasts from the Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan’s existing systems and other weather services in the regions.
- Utilize meteorological and hydrological models to predict weather patterns and water flow trends.
- Evaluate the Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan’s existing weather monitoring posts' manual data.
- Integrate Pakistan Meteorological Department’s weather information into this data, for quality data sharing with district-level government and other stakeholders.
- Provide technical assistance to the IT section or MIS to develop integrated dashboards for early warning systems.
- Conduct gap studies of weather-related information and services, particularly in Chitral, and propose solutions for efficient early warning systems based on weather forecasting and monitoring.
- Integrate Focus Humanitarian Assistance Pakistan’s resources with the National Weather Forecasting Agency and NDMA for data sharing.
- Help the risk anticipation section in monitoring the hotspot areas, which include glaciers, avalanches, and flash flood monitoring.
- Analyze the temperature trends of mountainous environments and generate reports for glacial outburst floods (GLOFs).
- Conduct workshops or training sessions on hydro-meteorological data interpretation and flood risk management for local staff and stakeholders.
Education, Experience and Skills
- A degree in Hydrometeorology, Environmental Science, Hydrology, or a related field.
- Proven experience in hydro-meteorological analysis and water resource management.
- Proficiency in relevant software and modelling tools.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- The position is based in Islamabad but will require extensive travelling to the programme areas across Pakistan.
