The Program Support Assistant performs duties in support of the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System - Primary Care Service - which includes physicians - nurse practitioners - auxiliary clinical staff - and clerical staff by performing work auxiliary to the work of the organization. The Program Support Assistant performs a variety of administrative tasks ranging from records and file management - correspondence - information control - property accountability - equipment and supply orders.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position - applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement - 05/22/2026. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position - you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5 grade level. The grade may have been in any occupation - but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year - it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade - as required by the announcement. In this instance - you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-5 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include - but are not limited to: Performing clerical/administrative duties in an office environment Answering and directing phone calls Preparing correspondence Maintaining files/records Time and attendance Human Resources functions Using a computer to perform a variety of support tasks. Typing Proficiency Requirement: In addition to meeting experience requirement - applicants for these positions must show possession of the following skills - as appropriate. Applicants may meet these requirements by passing the appropriate performance test - presenting a certificate of proficiency from a school or other organization authorized to issue such certificates by the Office of Personnel Management local office - or by self-certifying their proficiency. Performance test results and certificates of proficiency are acceptable for 3 years. Agencies may verify proficiency skills of self-certified applicants by administering the appropriate performance test. Office Automation typing requirement of 40 words per minute typing speed - Words per minute are based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.. At this grade level - applicants should have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to perform assignments independently with minimal oversight. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title - duties - month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to Detail Conscientiousness Customer Service (Clerical/Technical) Organizational Stewardship Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience - including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. - Peace Corps - AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. - professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies - knowledge - and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience - including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically - the employee sits comfortably to the work. However - there may be some walking; standing; bending; lifting and carrying of light items such as papers - books - small parts; or driving an automobile - etc. Physical dexterity is required in the operation of the computer and other required office equipment. Must be able to concentrate for long periods of time. The employee must be able to maintain composure when others are upset. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Duties
- Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Process incoming and outgoing materials such as a variety of correspondence - recurring reports - memoranda - and other forms of written communication
- Edits and/or composes letters and reports
- Reviews correspondence for accuracy and completeness
- Performs typing and office automation at or above the established minimum proficiency level
- Enters pertinent information into automated tracking systems
- Receives - schedules - refers and contacts VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System staff
- Provides general clerical public contact support services such as answering the telephone - referring visitors - or providing information to internal and external customers
- Handles extremely complex time and leave units involving union and non-union - professional - and non-professional staff - and staff located at several locations
- Plans and establishes office control systems such as those for the control of the location - security - arrangement - access to - and use of office files
- Serves as the program's liaison to the purchasing/procurement office to arrange for - monitor and secure equipment - services - and products
- Work Schedule: Monday to Friday - 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
