Job Description

Albemarle is hiring for an Advanced Process Control / Process Analytical Technology / Advanced Modeling Manager. This position is in-office and can be located at our corporate headquarters in Charlotte, NC, our Magnolia, Arkansas manufacturing facility, or at one of our global process development centers in either Baton Rouge, Louisiana or Kings Mountain, North Carolina.

What You Will Do

  • Manage and lead our Research & Technology team focused on advanced process controls, process analytical technology, and advanced process modeling.
  • Lead performance management processes for up to 10 employees, which include conducting annual performance reviews, guiding employee development plans, and setting goals and priorities.
  • Establishing a strong safety culture within your team.
  • Identify, evaluate, and execute "move-the-dial" process improvement programs in these areas, for both new and existing products. At the end of a project life cycle, clearly defined improvements to plant productivity, uptime, costs, quality, and/or HS&E should be demonstrated and proven.
  • Assess the economic merit and business cases for implementation of ideas and project proposals in various commercial applications.
  • Develop process analytical technology and/or online analytical solutions in commercial applications to improve productivity, operating costs, quality, and/or HS&E performance.
  • Support prior advanced process control (APC) systems at Albemarle commercial plants, and lead implementation of APC systems at new plants where economically justified.
  • Support prior real-time optimization (RTO) systems at Albemarle commercial plants, and lead implementation of RTO systems at new plants where economically justified.
  • Assess, evaluate, and make recommendations for preferred vendors for collaboration in these areas.
  • Collaborate with Research & Technology, Project Engineering, Manufacturing, and IT groups to implement process improvement programs after project approval.
  • Keep stakeholders up to date on project details and progress through regular reporting and presentations.

What You Bring

Required:

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline with 8+ years of industry experience
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying, evaluating, and executing projects using Advanced Process Control, Process Analytical Technology, and process modeling tools such as Aspen
  • Strong commitment to safety
  • Strong grounding in chemical engineering fundamentals
  • Demonstrated success in identification, evaluation, and execution of significant manufacturing process improvements within large integrated manufacturing processes
  • Demonstrated success organizing and leading large cross functional teams in the execution of significant technical programs or projects.
  • Strong communication skills with all levels and functions within the organization
  • Ability to frame complex subject matter concisely and develop buy-in for ideas
  • Ability to perform simple project economics calculations
  • Desire to build knowledge and skills in other team members across the GBU.
  • Willingness to accommodate periodic travel to the other Albemarle US and international sites, ranging from 25-40% depending on the year’s activities and the employee’s home site.

Preferred

  • Ability and desire to take on larger and more complex leadership roles in time
  • Working fundamental and practical knowledge of common chemical engineering unit operations and equipment
  • 10 + years experience
  • Experience in at least two of the following: (a) significant process development and scale up experience; (b) in plant manufacturing support involving significant troubleshooting of process and equipment issues; (c) process design; (d) project engineering; (e) significant commissioning and startup experience
  • Experience managing a team of technical professionals
