Description
The Kentucky School for the Deaf ensures that deaf and hard of hearing children and youth in Kentucky have educational opportunities to develop their potential to become educated, life-long learners and productive citizens. In partnership with families, local school districts and other services providers, KSD functions as a statewide education center where students come first.

Primary Role: Provides clerical support and assists KSD Teachers with instructional programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists students with disabilities in a classroom setting, during transition between buildings and classes and on school trips. Works individuals or in small groups with students.
- Assists classroom teachers with instructional needs. Collaborate with teachers and accept direction/guidance from teachers. Follow expectations established by classroom teacher. Assist with preparation of instructional materials.
- Works with behavior challenged students with appropriate behavior techniques. Attends training offered by the school relating to education.
- May cover classes when necessary.
- Provides office support and coverage as needed to include answering phones, greeting visitors, filing and making copies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
EDUCATION: High School graduate
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two (2) years of experience working within a school or classroom environment.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): An employee in this job title at the Kentucky School for the Deaf must furnish to the agency's appointing authority within twelve (12) months of appointment or entrance into this class, documentation that he or she possesses the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating of "Survival" level. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office or classroom setting assisting teachers and assisting students who are hearing impaired and/or vision impaired.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
