Summary:

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the Head Teacher in all school functions and activities. The Teacher Assistant is also responsible for assisting in daily maintenance and organization of the classroom. The Teacher Assistant adheres to the facility standards of conduct, rules and regulations pertaining to the office of child and family services and New York Health Department and State Fire Codes.

EDUCATION

To be qualified as an assistant teacher to any age class, a person must possess either:

  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, or
  • One year of experience working with children less than 13 years of age

Experience

  • Experience working with children is helpful, this position is entry level and training will be given by employer
  • Once employed, there will be a period of orientation and training to the specific duties and responsibilities of the positions in order to perform the job competently
  • Each staff person must complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of training every two years. Such training requirements
  • Fifteen (15) of the required thirty (30) hours of training must be obtained during the first six months of the program's first year of licensure or during the person's first six months of employment by the program

Knowledge, Skills Ability

  • Skills with working with children includes patience , tender care, understanding of age development and ability to understand relate to infants, toddlers, preschoolers and grammar school children
  • Ability to read, write, follow action plans and lesson plans
  • Ability to do light housekeeping, lite cooking, ability to interact with parents and children, complete forms related to this position including attendance sheets, cleaning charts, accident reports, daily care sheets etc
  • Physical effort is constant including sitting on floor, standing, sitting, running, bending and lifting

WORKING CONDITIONS

Each environment is different depending on the age of the child

  • Diapering environments and bathroom environments are two of the same goals, but different with in there design and description
  • Small equipment suitable to a children, this is the areas in which your main time is spent, health issues are related to children and the illness or germs that that have and share
  • Bodily fluids are common in this type of work and learning blood borne pathogens and boldly fluids are necessary to employees and children we serve
  • Normal heat, light space, and safe working environment; typical of most office jobs
  • Occasional exposure to one or more mildly unpleasant physical conditions
  • Intermittent exposure to a few unpleasant physical conditions
