Community engagement fellow

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

Climate Outreach Fellows at the San Francisco Environment Department play a key role in advancing waste reduction, edible food recovery, and urban greening through community-driven climate action. Fellows support the implementation of San Francisco’s zero-waste and environmental justice initiatives by conducting outreach to food-generating businesses on compliant donation practices, strengthening connections with food recovery organizations, and expanding participation in edible food rescue efforts.

Fellows also help scale the City’s native habitat and biodiversity efforts by strengthening partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, nurseries, and small businesses to expand access to drought-

tolerant native plants. Through the Grow, Tend, Find Nature programming, and climate ambassador training, Fellows mobilize volunteers to harvest local seeds, utilize the SF Plant Finder app, plant and steward native trees and plants, and activate community participation through the Share Nature map. Fellows co-create culturally responsive, multilingual educational materials and campaign messaging for urban greening and edible food recovery, supporting neighborhood-scale habitat creation and community climate resilience.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Coordinate city-led events and volunteer engagement efforts to expand participation in edible food recovery and native habitat restoration across San Francisco

Conduct outreach to food-generating businesses to support SB 1383 compliance and strengthen connections with food recovery organizations

Expand neighborhood-scale urban greening by planting 500 native plants and supporting habitat restoration efforts, including installations on Yerba Buena Island

Develop and circulate culturally relevant flyers, social media content, and campaign materials supporting edible food recovery and the Growing Nature initiative

Train volunteers as Climate Ambassadors to harvest local seeds, use SF Plant Finder, promote native plantings, and activate community engagement through the Share Nature map

Co-create a community-led messaging strategy for climate resilience, urban greening, and edible food recovery in San Francisco—developing culturally responsive flyers, social media content, and “Grow Nature” campaign materials

Track program data and analyze results to quantify climate impact
