Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona (RMHC®-SA) envisions a world where every family has what they need to ensure the best health outcomes for their child. Since 1981, the Ronald McDonald House® in Tucson has provided a warm and welcoming “home-away-from-home” for families with critically ill children that have traveled to Tucson for medical care. Some stay a few days. Some stay a few months. We offer them all a comfortable place to stay in a loving, supportive environment – all at no cost to the families.

We also serve all families at Banner Children’s Diamond Children’s Medical Center and TMC for Children with the Ronald McDonald Family Room® programs – places for family members to rest and regroup just steps from their child’s bedside. We partner with local Federally Qualified Health Centers on two Ronald McDonald Care Mobile® programs to provide dental care to children in underserved areas. In December 2024, we opened the RMHC Sibling Center in connection with the Play Zone at Banner Diamond Children’s.

How You Can Help

The Family Support Specialist is an essential part of our ambitious and compassionate team. This individual will play a major role in overseeing the day-to-day operations at RMHC-SA and prioritizing the care of the families staying at the House. The Family Support Specialist will be creative in building new programming and innovative in maintaining our current programs. A successful candidate will lead with empathy, be a self-starter, and share our passion for improving the lives of children and their families.

The Family Support Specialist will:

• Receive room requests and verify eligibility.
• Help families check into and out of the Ronald McDonald House and assist them with routine requests.
• Inventory House needs and order supplies and groceries.
• Be on call for night and/or weekend managers rotating weeks.
• Plan for and implement holiday celebrations and special events.
• Help plan and organize engaging activities at the House with outside partners such as Children’s Museum, Tu Nidito, and Project Sunshine.
• Promote and set up family support groups.
• Assist House to Home casserole program volunteers with orientation to kitchen, keeping inventory of casseroles on hand, and sending thank you videos to volunteers after they visit the House.
• Assist with running the House to Home and New Baby Bag programs.
• Create a monthly newsletter to send to families staying at the House with upcoming activities, community events, volunteer highlights, and special announcements.
• Implement Beads of Courage Sibling program by engaging with the siblings of the patient staying at the House. Activities include crafts, simple beading, stories, and sharing their experiences
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Proficiency in Spanish and English (spoken and written) is required.
• Experience working in a nonprofit, social service, or medical environment is a plus.
• A track record as an excellent communicator, in writing as well as verbally, preferably with customers and/or the medical community.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient, personnel, and corporate data.
• Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
• This position requires standing, sitting, and walking for periods of time as well as the ability to bend, lift, push, pull or carry supplies up to 30 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Excellent decision-making skills and the ability to confidently and independently direct the House program during on-call shifts, including a demonstrated ability to learn from mistakes.
• Must demonstrate the ability to be highly sensitive and supportive of the needs of RMHC-SA guest families.
• Ready to adapt to the everyday changes involved with caring for families experiencing trauma.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills are required.
• Ability to represent RMHC-SA professionally and enthusiastically.
• Microsoft Office (or equivalent) skills, including Outlook, Word, and Excel; Canva/Adobe (or similar) experience is a plus; CRM experience is a plus.
