About AIMS

The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.

We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect. AIMS’ research of Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world.

Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.

About these exciting opportunities

The Australian Institute of Marine Science's National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) is a world-class marine research aquarium facility for tropical marine organisms in which scientists can conduct cutting-edge research. Using SeaSim, Australian and international scientists can research the impact of complex environmental changes with large, long-term experiments in which they can manipulate key environmental factors. SeaSim provides fine control over environmental variables including light, temperature, acidity/pCO2, salinity, sedimentation and contaminants.

As a SeaSim Aquarist you will be involved in general cleaning, operation, optimisation, and maintenance of experimental aquarium systems and associated equipment within the Seawater Precinct. You will also facilitate both long- and short-term holdings of reef organisms by providing industry leading husbandry practices, including the production and provision of live feeds.

About you

Underpinning your suitability for these roles will be your bachelor’s degree in Marine Science, Biology, Ecology or similar, along with your experience working with aquarium and/or aquaculture systems. You have experience in the husbandry and maintenance of coral reef associated organisms and you have a positive, can-do attitude which will contribute to the success of the team. Experience in the operation and maintenance of life-support system components such as wavemakers, LED lights, and foam fractionators is highly desirable.

AIMS: Australia's tropical marine research agency.

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is an Australian Government statutory authority established in 1972. AIMS has highly developed capabilities in marine biodiversity, impacts and adaptation to climate change, water quality and ecosystem health. Fisheries, offshore oil and gas, mining, bulk ports, reef tourism and aquaculture industries have all benefited from AIMS research that is geared towards the protection and sustainable development of tropical marine resources.

The Institute maintains specialised, world class marine research facilities in Townsville, Perth and Darwin, providing ready access to Australia's tropical coasts and seas. The Institute operates two major vessels, the RV Cape Ferguson and the RV Solander, which support access to ecosystems across the continental shelf, and a fleet of smaller vessels that support near-shore fieldwork .

AIMS' research effort is designed to ensure that it is meeting the challenges facing our tropical marine ecosystems and the requirements of our stakeholders.
