Job Summary
The Payroll Technician keeps payroll records, makes updates, assists in check production, and answers payroll related questions. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).
Job Requirements
The following are required:
- A high school diploma or equivalent and courses in bookkeeping.
- Five years of experience in financial record keeping work.
- Payroll experience.
- Knowledge of office practices, procedures, and machines.
- Knowledge of financial record keeping, bargaining agreements, and individual contracts.
- Experience in the use of computers for payroll and record keeping.
- Ability to work independently and maintain productive working relationships with others through teamwork.
- Ability to type and operate 10-key calculator by touch.
- Ability to work well under stress caused by constant deadlines.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality concerning all sensitive pay records.
The following is preferred:
- Ability to make calculations and summarize them with speed and accuracy.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs record keeping operations related to the Anchorage School District's payroll activities.
- Researches and answers payroll questions.
- Maintains and updates employee data in relation to pay, deductions, and contributions.
- Compiles, arranges, posts, and verifies all computer input on all substitute employees in relation to all employment data, salary, and adjustments.
- Oversees printing of checks and advices to ensure proper routing and delivery.
- Ensures that timecards are timely and communicates with all units on deadlines and special processing.
- Works with the payroll coordinators for accurate preparation, maintenance, and balancing procedures for each payroll regarding accounting interface and payroll master file totals.
- Provides backup to other payroll functions such as payroll assistants, as assigned.
