Description Of Work
Recruitment Range: $104,000 - $145,000
EHRA - The position is designated Statutory Exempt (EHRA) and is exempt from the State Human Resources Act
This is an anticipated vacancy. This position is expected to become vacant on 12/31/2025.
This vacancy is open to current North Carolina state government and current UNC System employees only or previous NC state government and UNC System employees with unexpired RIF priority re-employment rights. Current temporary employees working in NC state government or in the UNC System will also be considered.
This position may be eligible for hybrid remote work in accordance with state policy and the agency’s remote work program but does require weekly onsite work

In this supervisory role, you'll guide the LAN/WAN team while delivering expert-level support, resolving critical technical issues, and shaping the future of our service offerings. Your Key Responsibilities
The Network Operations group at NCDIT plays a central role in designing, implementing, and managing the state’s enterprise networking infrastructure. This includes Wide Area Networks (WAN), Metro Area Networks (MAN), Local Area Networks (LAN), and wireless systems. The team supports service owners and directors across North Carolina state agencies by developing technical solutions, architectural blueprints, and operational standards. Their responsibilities span from network engineering and security to cloud connectivity and telecom transport technologies. The group is also involved in lifecycle management of networking services, ensuring scalability, security, and continuity for critical state functions.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in network engineering

Associate degree in Computer Science or an IT related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in network engineering
or
High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and seven years of experience in networking or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

- Senior level support and escalation for all service support, and service delivery issues in the Network Services WAN technical areas
- Monitor all Network Services management systems, with primary focus on WAN and LAN services
- Work in resolving highly complex technical issues
- Escalate and communicate customer issues
- Conduct incident/problem post-mortems with customers
- Anticipate and review trends to ensure compliance with state security policies and standards
- Serve as a technical resource to perform Root Cause Analysis and Post Implementation Reviews

- Considerable knowledge in configuration, use and management of Ethernet protocol (IEEE 802.2), VLAN design and management, TCP/IP, MPLS, OSPF, BGP, LAN, Extreme, MetroEthernet, and Gigabit Ethernet protocols
- Hardware: Experience with all Cisco routers and switches, Areohive
- Considerable knowledge of IP addressing, subnet masking, and routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP and static routing
