ABI Rehabilitation is the leading provider of intensive in-patient brain injury rehabilitation in New Zealand. ABI provide post-acute, residential, and community-based rehabilitation for kiritaki with traumatic brain injury. We are proud to integrate both western clinical practice and mātauranga Māori through our waka Hourua model, with a strong focus on whānau-centred care and the ongoing implementation of Te Hekenga-ā-ora, our Māori Development Plan.
About The Role
This Kaiārahi Kaupapa Māori role provides cultural leadership across the rehabilitation journey, working alongside kiritaki, whānau, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure care is culturally safe, meaningful, and grounded in kaupapa Māori.
You will support kiritaki and whānau from pre-admission through to discharge and community transition, while also building the capability of kaimahi and embedding Te Hekenga-ā-ora across practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide cultural leadership and guidance to support cultural safe and effective rehabilitation for Māori
- Walk alongside kiritaki and whānau to uphold mana and strengthen engagement throughout their journey
- Support culturally grounded goal setting and rehabilitation planning
- Guide and support kaimahi to build confidence and capability in tikanga Māori and culturally safe practice
- Contribute to a culturally responsive environment through practices such as karakia, whakawhanaungatanga, and kaupapa Māori initiatives
- Support transitions into, within, and out of ABI services, ensuring continuity of care and connection to community
- Strong knowledge of Tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori
- Confidence in Te Reo Māori (ā-waha, ā-tuhi)
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence with a team environment
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to support and educate others in culturally safe practice
- Demonstrate ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and organisation skills
- Excellent administrative/computer skills
- Current NZ driver License
- Social work experience would be an advantage
