SLS is seeking a Senior Chemist (Organic) to join our Environmental Chemistry Laboratory in Sydney. This role combines technical leadership, routine analytical support, instrument management, and applied R&D within an environmental laboratory.

This position ensures high-quality analytical output for organic contaminants (e.g., VOCs, SVOCs, TPH, PFAS where applicable) using GC and LC-based techniques, while maintaining compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA accreditation requirements.

This position is ideal for a technically strong analytical chemist who enjoys solving technical problems, improving analytical methods, and working in a dynamic laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the QAQC Manager Sydney Laboratory Supervisor and Operations Manager, your duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Routine Testing & Operational Support
  • Perform routine sample preparation, analysis, calculations, and result entry for assigned analytical methods and instruments.
  • Support daily laboratory operations to achieve turnaround time (TAT), productivity, and quality targets.
  • Monitor routine batch performance and escalate QC or technical issues where required.
  • Assist with laboratory workflow coordination and operational problem solving.
  • Authorise and report analytical results as an approved signatory, where applicable and within approved scope of competence.
  • Data Processing & Technical Review
  • Perform and oversee data processing, integration, and verification for GC/LC analytical results.
  • Conduct technical review of analytical data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with QA/QC criteria.
  • Identify trends, anomalies, and QC failures and initiate investigations where required.
  • Support reporting and ensure results are fit for purpose and meet client and regulatory requirements.
  • Instrument Management & Troubleshooting
  • Allocate workload to meet turnaround time (TAT) and operational targets.

  • Prepare and update SOPs, technical methods, and laboratory documentation
  • Support LIMS configuration including calculations and QC rules
  • Provide technical training and competency support to laboratory staff
  • R&D and Method Improvement
  • Lead and support method optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in method validation, verification, and implementation into routine testing.
  • Investigate recurring QC or technical issues and develop robust solutions.
  • Support expansion of organic analytical capability aligned with business needs.
  • Quality, Compliance & Safety
  • Work in compliance with the laboratory QMS, including traceability, recordkeeping, and nonconforming work reporting.
  • Support internal/external audit activities and corrective actions as requested.
  • Comply with WHS requirements for chemical handling, waste disposal and risk controls; maintain a safe work environment.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience, preferably in an environmental laboratory
  • Strong hands-on experience with GC and LC techniques (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS preferred).
  • Strong analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Experience working within NATA accredited ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory quality systems
  • Strong technical documentation and report writing skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility to work occasional weekend or shift work when required
  • Additional experience in inorganic analysis using IC, CFA, ICP-OES and/or ICP-MS would be highly regarded.
