Description

Under (I) immediate or (II) general supervision, conducts interviews with parents and members of the general public regarding child support, medical support and paternity matters; explains program requirements and procedures; manages a caseload; accesses available resources to determine the parent’s ability to contribute support; initiates investigation to locate non-custodial parents; does initial case preparation for child support prosecution and litigation.

Appointments may be made at level I or II depending on the Department’s needs and the candidate's qualifications. Candidates appointed at the CSSS I level may be promoted to CSSS II upon meeting minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and depending on the needs of the Department.

EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate/Bachelor's/Master's degree.

CSSS I – Annual Salary: $31,488 - $40,166

CSSS II – Annual Salary: $34,566 - $44,083

Examples Of Duties

Typical duties include, but are not limited to,

  • Interviewing complainants and witnesses;
  • Locating non-custodial parents;
  • Initiating petitions to other jurisdictions;
  • Evaluating support payment capabilities of non-custodial parents;
  • Negotiating support orders;
  • Reviewing and monitoring assigned support cases to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and guidelines and maintaining contact with the parents, general public, representatives of other agencies and witnesses;
  • Other related duties as assigned

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

Education, Training and Experience: Experience which has led to the acquisition of the required knowledge and abilities. The required knowledge and abilities can also be obtained by at least two (2) years of responsible work experience involving substantial professional public contact which includes the eliciting of information, performance of math computations and completion of complex forms, OR one year experience performing the duties of a clerical or fiscal position within the Department of Child Support Services, County of Ventura.

Special Requirement: Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid California Driver license at time of appointment.

Recruitment Process

Applications will be accepted from Sunday, June 5, 2005 to Friday, June 24, 2005. Ventura County Human Resources Department in Ventura, California MUST RECEIVE APPLICATIONS, NO LATER THAN five (5:00) p.m. on June 24, 2005.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Applicants may be subjected to a thorough background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, credit, criminal background information and driving record.

Application Evaluation – qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to the written examination.

Written Examination - 100%: A job related written examination will be administered to test candidates’ knowledge of interviewing, investigation, computation, public contact/relations and other areas. Candidates must earn a score of 70 percent or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.
