BUSINESS UNIT: TERMINALS
Kinder Morgan is the largest independent terminal operator in North America, providing a strong, reliable network of 144 terminals serving our customers’ storage, distribution, blending and logistical needs. Our terminals store and handle renewable fuels, petroleum products, chemicals, vegetable oils and other products. We have a combined liquids storage capacity of approximately 151 million barrels and handle about 59 million tons of dry bulk materials annually.
Monitor SCADA equipment to remotely control the safe operation of multiple pipelines, pump stations, valves, gathering systems and terminals in accordance with DOT, OSHA, and Kinder Morgan regulations, policies and procedures. Level of position will be based on education and experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Utilize Kinder Morgan’s SCADA systems and processes for monitoring and control of the Product Pipelines controlled by the Houston Control Center
- Respond, anticipate and make assessments for any abnormal conditions encountered on the pipelines.
- Respond to emergency situations as outlined in the Emergency Response Plan.
- Communicate critical information to Field Operations personnel and Management in a timely fashion.
- Monitor pipeline pressures, flow rates and other SCADA information for leak detection purposes.
- Coordinate the fulfillment of confirmed nominations with Field Operations personnel, and third party point operators.
- Ensure accuracy of and adherence to schedules, batch sizes and confirmed nominations.
- Manage schedules; emphasizing efficiencies such as unit selection and power optimization.
- Monitor incoming/outgoing volumes.
- Monitor product quality.
- Monitor facilities for power and/or communications failure.
- Ensure smooth transition of shift turnovers through verbal and written communication.
- Ensure ongoing improvement through evaluation of current processes.
- Perform other pipeline related duties as assigned.
- Write effectively, and understand verbal and written communications including, but not limited to, email.
- Deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
- Speak clearly, both in person and by telephone, using a high level of verbal skills, and listen carefully.
- Maintain a regular, dependable attendance record, and high level of job performance.
- Maintain a high regard for personal safety, the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
- Work non-traditional hours (12-hour shift rotation is required to maintain a 24x7x365 operation); work schedule change may occur with little advance notice. Holidays/weekends/nights included.
- Occasional unscheduled overtime may be required and is anticipated.
- Infrequent travel outside the job location is required.
- May assist or provide support for projects as necessary when not assigned to a specific console
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Bachelors level degree with business, engineering or mechanical orientation is preferred if no prior experience.
- Must have at least 1-3 years of industry experience, preferably in pipeline control
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel)
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft applications (including, but not limited to, Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Ability to work with a team, take direction from supervisor(s) and lead personnel, focus attention on details, follow work rules, and adhere to established work schedules.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Good problem-solving skills, including the ability to utilize multiple resources to arrive at a solution.
- Must successfully complete and maintain all Operator Qualification training and testing relevant to this position.
- Must complete compliance and regulatory training relevant to this position.
- Ability to take initiative and work with co-workers to accomplish defined goals in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical skills and logical thought processes, with ability to think quickly and provide support for emergency operations, including staying current on emergency operating procedures and practices.
- Ability to quickly analyze changing conditions on the pipeline, and make appropriate adjustments within operating parameters.
- Ability to adjust to changing schedules and other urgent situations is necessary.
- Ability to organize and prioritize daily work, and maintain confidentiality as necessary.

- 24x7x365 operation; 12-hour shift work; rotating shifts; work schedule change may occur with little advance notice. Holidays/weekends/nights included.
- Unscheduled overtime is required and anticipated
- Will be required to stay in hotels close to the Corporate headquarters due to local flooding
- Will be required to travel as needed for Disaster Recovers Drills or site specific training.
- May be required to relocate self and family for up to 12 days due to natural disasters to the Relocation site in Colorado Springs
- Job level commensurate with experience and skill sets
- The successful candidate will be required to clear a DOT drug screen and a complete background check, including credit report (as applicable to the position), after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed
- Two years direct work experience in pipeline operations and control is highly desirable
- Working knowledge of condensate and crude oil terms and principles is a plus
- Proficiency with SCADA programs is preferred
- Mechanical familiarity with and understanding of pumps is helpful
- Experience working in a 24x7x365 work environment is advantageous
