Who We Are:

Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. We are currently seeking a full-time Residential Aide (Direct Support Professional) at our group homes to provide direct supervision, supports, and training in skill acquisition and community integration activities for consumers with intellectual disabilities, autism, co-occurring mental illness, and/or physical disabilities in a residential setting. Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; some college coursework or experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities preferred; one year (1) of experience in the Human Services field; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Medication administration certification preferred; CPR First Aid Certification preferred; experience with an electronic health record preferred. One (1) year of experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities preferred; related experience working in a group home setting preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

Knowledge of basic principles, practices and techniques related to support and care for individuals with intellectual disabilities; working knowledge of person-centered practices to support individuals with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities; first aid and emergency techniques; support services. Ability to supervise individuals in a residential or community-based program setting; to provide direct care to individuals which involves demanding work including, but not limited to, heavy lifting, walking up and down stairs, standing for prolonged periods of time, squatting, stooping, bending, twisting, stretching, crawling, and reaching overhead; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Ability to document notes in an electronic health record system preferred.

Additional Requirements:

Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the preceding twenty-four months, or one major violation of six demerit points with the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Duties

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To The Following:

  • Provides support and teaching to adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, co-occurring mental illness, and/or physical disabilities;
  • Works in a group home setting to support choices, inclusion, decision making, and self-directed services;
  • Instructs, monitors and assists residents in activities of daily living such as personal hygiene, medication administration, food preparation, shopping, housework, community integration and inclusion, and money management;
  • Provides supervision and guidance to consumers participating in program activities;
  • Maintains a safe and clean-living environment and monitors, enforces, and implements facility rules, policies and procedures;
  • Handles emergency situations appropriately and utilizes crisis interventions as necessary;
  • Transports and escorts clients to and from various services, appointments, and activities;
  • Prepares and maintains casework and related documentation (e.g. Medicaid Waiver documentation, progress notes) in an electronic health record system as required in the delivery of services; and
  • Performs other work as required.

Shift

Wednesday - Friday; 10:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m. and Saturday; 8:00 p.m. - 8:00 a.m.
