The technical writer will be responsible for creating, editing and maintaining technical documentation that communicates information clearly and accurately. This role will involve collaborating with engineers and other subject matter experts to gather and produce high-quality documentation.

In compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Field Office (HFO) direction, employees issued initial badges on or after September 1st, 2025, are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a federal background check investigation. This investigation encompasses multiple areas of eligibility and includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year.
In accordance with the HMIS salary determination process, offers will be made by taking into consideration the level of assigned job duties, responsibilities, and the candidate's qualifications relative to internal peers and the external labor market. A candidate's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions. The salary range listed represents the full range of salary that may be offered.
The technical writer will be responsible for creating, editing and maintaining technical documentation that communicates information clearly and accurately. This role will involve collaborating with engineers and other subject matter experts to gather and produce high-quality documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, write and edit technical documents including engineering reports, manuals, specifications, and procedures.
- Develop, write, edit and manage preventive maintenance procedures. Use equipment documentation to create maintenance work procedures. Collaborate with engineers, operations, and field workers to ensure procedures are accurate and efficient. Coordinate walk-throughs of new procedures to ensure they are workable.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers to understand project requirements and translate technical information into clear concise documentation.
- Ensure all documentation complies with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Review and update existing documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Assist in the development of templates and style guides to improve consistency.
- Conduct quality assurance checks on technical documents to maintain high standard of quality.
- Manage multiple documentation projects simultaneously ensuring timely delivery.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential badge.
- Bachelor's degree in Technical Writing, English, Communications, or a related field and 1 year experience in technical writing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in using documentation tools such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Ability to understand and interpret complex technical information.
- Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
- Familiarity with regulatory standards and compliance requirements.
