Position Summary

West Hartford Public Schools seeks an outstanding educational leader for the Assistant Principal position at Sedgwick Middle School. Candidates must possess the background and diverse skills needed to assist the Principal with the supervision and the direction of the instructional program, the evaluation of personnel, support and supervision of students, the management of the school, and such other duties delegated by the Principal. Strong interpersonal skills, effective communicator, data driven/data analysis, well versed in PLC process and school improvement initiatives; experience with master scheduling preferred but not required; collaborative and highly organized; problem-solver; administrative duties and teacher supervision

Major Duties And Responsibilities

Budget

  • Participates in the development of the school budget within the guidelines provided by the Superintendent, as requested by the Principal.

Communication

  • Promotes a positive, caring climate for learning.
  • Helps to develop and maintain effective communications with students, staff, and families.
  • Assists in maintaining direct relations with parents/caregivers and the community.
  • Facilitates procedures for the reporting of pupil progress to parents.
  • Plans and develops means of maintaining close communication with feeder schools.

Curriculum

  • Contributes to the development and evaluation of curriculum programs.
  • Considers the needs of students and the community in developing the school program.
  • Assists in the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum and its effect on the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of students.
  • Shares responsibility for the general growth, development, safety, and health of the students in the school.

Facilities

  • Participates in the development of campus improvement plans with the principal on the maintenance, repair, and improvement of building, grounds, and equipment.
  • Promotes health and safety standards.

Organization

  • Aids in the preparation of the school schedule.
  • Reviews the organization and recommends to the Principal changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Assist in the management of alternative educational programs.

Professional Growth

  • Encourages faculty participation in staff development programs of personal and professional growth.
  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignment. Assists the Principal in identifying, planning, and implementing staff development programs.

Evaluation

  • Evaluates both certified and non-certified staff in accordance with the evaluation program.
  • Assist the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.

Authority

  • The Assistant Principal is responsible to, serves under, and is evaluated by the school Principal and assumes full responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal.
