Birth Tissue Coordinator

LifeSource is hiring a Birth Tissue Coordinator to be responsible for identifying potential tissue donors, obtaining informed consent, and ensuring all necessary documentation is completed. This role involves overseeing the entire process of tissue acquisition, packaging, and shipment, while ensuring compliance with all regulatory and ethical guidelines. The Birth Tissue Coordinator collaborates closely with healthcare professionals, including obstetricians and nurses, as well as laboratory and operating room staff, to maintain effective relationships and ensure the success of the Birth Tissue Program.

This is an amazing new program that allows expectant mothers to donate the placenta, umbilical cord, and amniotic fluid after delivery. Instead of being discarded as medical waste, these tissues are processed into regenerative grafts used to treat severe wounds, burns, and spinal or eye injuries - at absolutely no cost to the family. Birth tissues are rich in stem cells, collagen, and growth factors that promote rapid healing and reduce inflammation. Donated tissue can produce up to 100 medical grafts, which are used to heal a wide range of applications, including diabetic ulcers, sports medicine injuries, and help wounded military personnel. Birth tissue also has ophthalmologic, orthopedic and gynecological uses, and supports the development of new treatments and scientific research.

As an Birth Tissue Coordinator, you’ll advance our life-saving work by performing the following job duties:

Independently facilitates and coordinates all aspects of Informed Consent, Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI), suitability evaluation, acquisition, packaging, and shipment for birth tissue cases.

• Following established regulatory requirements, evaluate donation potential in collaboration with external clinical professionals.
• Ensure thorough, accurate, and timely documentation of all referral activity into defined systems in accordance with policy and procedure.
• Upon documentation of Informed Consent, fulfill accurate completion of the Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI)
• Thoroughly review and evaluate medical records obtained from the hospital.
• Assess suitability of serology testing specimens, ensure ability to fulfill all required lab testing.
• Communicate effectively with other internal departments and hospital partners representatives to ensure timely and accurate updates regarding the status of all donation activities.
• Assembles, packages and transports birth tissue supplies and delivers to hospital.
• Collaborates with donor hospital partners to ensure effective operating room or labor & delivery room setup are optimal to facilitate the birth tissue donation process.
• Utilizing sterile technique, scrubs in, to package birth tissue for transplant or research in accordance with FDA & American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) standards and LifeSource & Birth Tissue Processors procedures.
• Completes post case activities including birth tissue shipment and terminal cleaning, documentation, and restocking.
• Ensure donor referral/case record completion within established timelines and quality review as needed.
  
  

Engage in establishing rapport with birth mother presenting her with birth tissue donation information.

• Make a positive presentation regarding the donation process utilizing current best practices and philosophies to obtain and document Informed Consent.
• Obtain legal Informed Consent in a matter that meets or exceeds departmental expectations.
• Keep the birth mother informed, along with the health care professionals, regarding the timeline of the donation process, explains what is occurring and meets the needs of the birth mother and her care team.
  
  

Ensures effective, respectful, and strong communication and collaboration with hospital staff, physicians, related donation agencies, and other LS team members to fulfill donation.

• Works in strong collaboration with hospital staff, physicians and LS clinical team members to meet birth tissue goals.
• Ensures adherence to hospital policies, procedures, and equipment usage.
• Acts as a birth tissue expert resource for donation education needs.
  
  

Qualifications

• Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to 3 years of medical terminology, human anatomy or disease process responsibilities in a direct patient or family care setting.
• Prefer understanding and practice of aseptic technique.
• Requires ability to display compassion with interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to speak and communicate clearly to convey information to birth mothers, hospital team members and birth tissue processor personnel in person or by phone.
• Must maintain a valid driver license and have reliable personal automobile to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines.
• With the variation of work duties and volume, it is essential to have strong personal stress management skills.
• Demonstrated ability to exhibit a high degree of quality, integrity, and honor confidentiality of all medical information and documentation, including protected health information (PHI).
• Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers with proficiency in the ability to develop and connect with people quickly.
• Proven self-directed, motivated contributor with a strong initiative and ability to function autonomously, establish priorities and work effectively within a team environment
• Must be organized, detail oriented, and have excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

• Proven skilled and competent in using technology-based tools such as personal computers and related software, mobile devices and electronic medical record systems as appropriate for position.
  
  

Schedule: Must be able to work weekdays, Monday-Friday. Variable shifts of 6am-2pm or 12pm-8pm. Must be able to adjust schedule to accommodate organizational needs including times of clinical high volume.

• Required to work for extended periods of time with few breaks.
• Able to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with schedule adjusted to accommodate organizational needs.
• Must assist during periods of high clinical volume outside of the posted schedule. Overtime may be appropriate to meet organizational needs.
  
  

Travel: Must maintain a valid driver license and have reliable personal automobile to be used with company reimbursement using IRS guidelines. Must be able to travel to hospitals within the Birth Tissue service area.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Affected team member in OSHA Exposure Category I are regularly exposed to bloodborne pathogens and handle materials that could spread infection (more than one opportunity per month). Additionally, their position may require interaction with staff in patient or donor areas in a hospital, operating room, or clinic setting.
• Must be able to follow and successfully complete category immunization, health screening and background check requirements.
• Frequently lift/pull/push up to 50 pounds and carry short distances. Stamina for the ability to stand 80% of the time during shift.
• Environmental influences may include unpleasant odors, slippery surfaces, work in labor & delivery unit and operating room, exposure to human tissue and associated hazards and biohazards.
  
  

Projected offer range: $33-39/hour, based on relevant experience
