Job description:
The main tasks and responsibilities of the Economic Research, Forecasting and Monetary Policy Directorate are related to the preparation of analytical materials and macroeconomic forecasts, conducting research, econometric modeling and simulations that support decision-making by the Governing Council of the BNB. After Bulgaria's accession to the euro area, the Directorate will play an important role in the process of formulating the position of the BNB Governor on issues related to the single monetary policy of the Eurosystem. Part of the work of the Directorate is related to the preparation of periodical publications that analyse the latest economic developments, an example of which is the quarterly 'Economic Review'. The experts in the Directorate are actively involved in the BNB's two-year research plan, which includes topics related to the implementation of the BNB's objectives and tasks. Part of the research results is published in the 'BNB Discussion Papers Series. The experts from the Directorate participate in different working groups of the European System of Central Banks where they work alongside colleagues from other European countries on specific subjects according to their field of specialisation. They also participate in regular meetings with international institutions (European Central Bank, International Monetary Fund, European Commission and others), during which the current state of the Bulgarian economy and the expectations for its future development are discussed.
Minimum requirements:
• Education – Bachelor’s degree or higher;
• Relevant fields of study – economics, macroeconomics, finance, econometrics, statistics, mathematics;
• Excellent skills in speaking and writing in English (C1 level according to the European language framework) and Bulgarian;
• Excellent skills in working with MS Office.
The following are considered as an advantage:
• Experience in working with specialised software for statistical analysis such as EViews, MATLAB, Stata, R and Python;
• Experience in data science and working with databases;
• Analytical reports or research papers.
Selection of candidates will be done based on documents, a written examination (in the form of open-ended questions in the fields of economic theory and applied economic analysis), and an interview in several selection cycles until the vacant positions are filled.
The current selection cycle will be conducted according to the following schedule:
Submission of documents by 20 April 2026.
Written examination by 05 May 2026.
Interview by 20 May 2026.
Candidates will be promptly notified about the results of each stage.

The Bulgarian National Bank is one of the oldest national institutions established right after the restoration of the Bulgarian state, on January 25, 1879, and on 6 of June of the same year the first banking operation was conducted.
According to the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria (article 29) the BNB is an independent issuing institution of the State reporting to the National Assembly. It plays a key role in the Bulgarian economy and takes care of maintaining the stability of the Bulgarian currency, and of strengthening and development of the banking and credit system in the country.
The BNB’s independence is also guaranteed by its organic Law (LBNB), and by the Treaty establishing the European Community. Since January 1, 2007 the bank is a full member of the European System of Central Banks and actively participates in the decision making process in the area of banking and finance in the European Union. The BNB Governor is a member of the General Council of the European Central Bank.
