Mentor A Promise is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth (ages 5–18) experiencing housing instability, grounded in the belief that every child is a Promise—full of potential, dignity, and possibility. We deliver consistent, high-quality programming across mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, and creative expression in shelters, schools, and community spaces, creating structured environments where students can grow, be seen, and build lasting skills. Through signature experiences like The Imagination Studio, The Kitchen Table, The Sound Lab, and The Story Space, we nurture academic development, emotional well-being, and creative voice, all within a trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and accessibility-centered framework. Our work prioritizes dignity-protective storytelling, consent-driven engagement, and deep community partnership, ensuring that how we serve is as intentional as whom we serve. We are not only addressing immediate needs - we are building pathways to confidence, belonging, and long-term opportunity, so every child has the support and foundation to carry their promise forward.

About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit organization serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, educational enrichment, workforce development, creative opportunity, advocacy, housing innovation, and community-centered support.

At MAP, stories help build understanding, connection, and community.

Through journalism, storytelling, photography, interviews, essays, and human-centered reporting, we seek to amplify voices, share experiences, and highlight issues affecting children and families.

About PromiseVoice

PromiseVoice is MAP's communications, public engagement, media, journalism, content strategy, and storytelling division.

The division is responsible for helping the public understand MAP's mission, impact, advocacy efforts, programs, and community stories through thoughtful and compelling content.

PromiseVoice transforms stories into awareness and awareness into action.

Role Overview

The Magazine Manager serves as the leader responsible for overseeing the planning, production, editorial coordination, and publication of MAP's digital magazine and long-form editorial content.

This role manages contributors, writers, editors, photographers, designers, and storytellers while ensuring that magazine content reflects MAP's mission, values, editorial standards, and commitment to ethical storytelling.

Working closely with PromisePages, PromiseStudios, PromiseResearch, PromisePublic, and PromiseBrands, the Magazine Manager helps create a publication that educates, inspires, informs, and elevates the voices of children, families, volunteers, partners, and communities.

The ideal candidate is an organized editorial leader with strong storytelling instincts and a passion for mission-driven publishing.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Planning & Publication Management

  • Lead planning and production of MAP's magazine
  • Develop editorial calendars and publishing schedules
  • Coordinate issue themes, features, and special editions
  • Manage publication timelines and deadlines
  • Ensure consistent publication quality and standards

Content Development

  • Oversee development of feature stories, interviews, essays, opinion pieces, and community stories
  • Work with contributors to strengthen content quality
  • Support story ideation and editorial planning
  • Ensure content aligns with MAP's mission and editorial guidelines
  • Promote diverse voices and perspectives

Editorial Operations

  • Manage article workflow from concept to publication
  • Coordinate writers, editors, photographers, and designers
  • Review content for quality, accuracy, and consistency
  • Support editorial review and approval processes
  • Maintain organized editorial systems and records

Contributor Management

  • Recruit and support volunteer writers and contributors
  • Coordinate assignments and publishing schedules
  • Foster collaboration among editorial team members
  • Support contributor development and engagement
  • Build a strong community of storytellers

Audience Engagement

  • Support strategies that expand readership and engagement
  • Help identify content opportunities that resonate with audiences
  • Monitor publication performance and reader feedback
  • Promote meaningful community conversations through storytelling
  • Strengthen the magazine's impact and reach

Cross-Divisional Collaboration

  • Partner with PromiseResearch on research-informed content
  • Collaborate with PromisePublic on policy and advocacy storytelling
  • Support PromisePages literary and narrative initiatives
  • Work with PromiseStudios on multimedia storytelling opportunities
  • Align magazine content with organizational priorities
